PostModern Living is an emerging indie rock band based in Manchester. Formed by a group of schoolmates in early 2024, the band combines energetic guitar-driven sound with thoughtful songwriting. They write all their own material and are steadily refining their musical identity through regular writing and performing.

Musically, PostModern Living blends the raw, edgy textures of post-punk with the melodic and lyrical sensibilities of modern indie. Their influences range from the moody complexity of Radiohead and the sharp wit of Arctic Monkeys, to the raw cool of The Strokes. They also draw inspiration from earlier icons like The Smiths, Pixies, and The Velvet Underground—creating a layered, evolving sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh.

Definitely a band to keep an eye on in Manchester’s vibrant indie scene.

One of the exhibitions that I personally found deeply moving at CAF25 was The Glass House. First and foremost, because of the powerful imagery—it focused on the cactus collection at Wythenshawe Horticultural Centre and instantly brought to mind Graciela Iturbide’s iconic work at the Botanical Garden in Oaxaca decades ago.

I was also fascinated by the video showing the photographic process itself. My nearly eight-year-old son was genuinely amazed to see how these images are created—an eye-opening experience for both of us.

And of course, spending time with Michele Selway was a highlight in itself. She's not only a talented photographer and visual artist but also a warm and generous person.

Michele is a visual artist working across a wide range of mediums—from wet plate collodion and 35mm photography to digital filmmaking and large-scale installations. Her work often carries a documentary feel, deeply rooted in the stories of people and places. She has collaborated with local botanists, historians, new mothers, and even worked on projects abroad, including one in Mexico about deportees.

🌵 Exhibition – The Glass House
This project tells the story of the 200-year-old cactus collection housed at Wythenshawe Park’s Horticultural Centre—a collection that once survived a suffragette bombing. Using Victorian photographic equipment and the rare 1851 Wet Plate Collodion process, Michele photographed the glasshouse and the people protecting it. The resulting large-format glass plate images form a unique, three-dimensional touring exhibition that began its journey at CAF25.

One of the exhibitions that I personally found deeply moving at CAF25 was The Glass House. First and foremost, because of the powerful imagery—it focused on the cactus collection at Wythenshawe Horticultural Centre and instantly brought to mind Graciela Iturbide’s iconic work at the Botanical Garden in Oaxaca decades ago.

Another of the great exhibitions at CAF25 was @helen_jonesart ’s.

I had the chance to see her work up close and was genuinely drawn in by the textures and quiet strength of her pieces. Helen Jones is a fine artist based in Manchester who works with embroidery, textiles, and photography — often blending these in really experimental ways.

Her CAF25 exhibition featured abstract paintings inspired by aerial views of land. Nature clearly plays a central role in her work, and you can feel that connection through the flowing shapes and organic patterns she captures.

At @chorlton.arts 25, I headed to the @royaloakchorlton for one of the gigs organised by @caftwentyone as part of the Teen Spirit section.

The band kicked off with full energy, and from the very first notes, the audience cleared the chairs to have more space to move around. I was right at the front, crouched down, when I spotted that moment – the one that needed to be captured. So I waited... and waited... until I finally got the framing I was after, playing with focus and the movement of the subjects. It’s in moments like these that music, community and photography come together perfectly.

At @chorlton.arts 25, I headed to the @royaloakchorlton for one of the gigs organised by @caftwentyone as part of the Teen Spirit section.

Helen studied printed textiles at MMU in the ‘90s, worked in design, and now balances her time between painting and her role as a palliative care nurse — a profession close to her heart.

Her exhibition, though modest in size, had a quiet strength. Inspired by her travels (including a recent trip to Italy) and her garden, her work carries a personal warmth that lingers with you.

It left many of us wanting to see more — and that, I think, is the mark of something truly special.

They’re often at the back of the band, sometimes hidden behind cymbals and snares — but it’s their beat that gives life to the music, and rhythm to our bodies.

Drummers are the pulse of any band — they hold everything together when things get wild, and they set the pace when things need to soar. Their presence is felt more than seen, like a quiet force driving the energy forward.

At one point, my son turned to me and said:
“Roddy, what if we came to see this band every day of the festival? I really like them — they’re good!”

Hard to argue with that. When a band hits like that — you just feel it.

I’ve got a few stories to share about Jonno’s band — but here’s the first one.

First—every time I attend a spoken word or poetry event at @chorlton.arts (this year and in past editions), the venues are packed. And honestly, it’s heartwarming to see how much we in Chorlton care about literature, how deeply we connect with stories, the aesthetics of language, and the urge to reflect through words. As Derrida put it: “There is nothing outside the text, yet it is always shaped by context.”

Second confession? Every time I go, I end up with my brain slightly fried... Even after over a decade in the UK, spoken word in a second language still demands a bit more focus. But I love that feeling—that blend of effort, deep listening, and joy.

This time, I had the chance to attend and photograph @samtoveypoetry ’s performance—an intimate and powerful moment at @maryandarchiechorlton Sam’s words carried a rawness that felt personal and political at once, exploring identity, belonging, and what it means to grow into yourself in your twenties. The way he shares the emotional complexity of being mixed-race in today’s UK is both bold and beautifully vulnerable.

It’s wild to think this was @norestforthesurfers ’s third time playing at CAF — I still remember their very first live gig back at CAF23. (Or at least I think I do… memory does get a bit hazy with time, haha.)

As a photographer, following their journey has been a joy. From those early raw bursts of sound to now — with their EP NRFTS and the bold single “Welcome to the Tory Party” — they’ve come a long way, and they’ve done it their way.

This year, they opened the festival with their trademark energy — intense, loud, and full of fire. And their connection with the crowd? Still unmatched. (They’ve honestly got one of the best fan bases I’ve ever seen through my lens.)

One of the most beautiful things about CAF25 is the way it brings people together. Sharing our art is just the beginning — what really matters is the conversations, the faces you start to recognise, the friendships that quietly grow.

Last year I had a lovely little chat with @heatherdickinsonillustration on camera. This year, seeing her again felt like running into an old friend. We knew each other’s work, we shared a smile — that’s how community begins.

Even more special: I got to introduce her to my son. Now he has one of her postcards — a small treasure filled with magic and detail.

Take a closer look at her work — every illustration is a doorway to a story, filled with characters and hidden moments that feel like they’re whispering secrets just to you.

Later that week, during a jazz concert at @thelloydschorlton , I ran into her again — and of course, she hadn’t stopped working (or perhaps, simply doing what she loves). There she was, sketchbook in hand, capturing the moment with quiet focus.

We’re sharing a few images here from that evening — and if you haven’t yet seen her sculptures, do take a look. They’re truly remarkable.

Just wanted to share that at the Chorlton Arts Festival, they hosted several days of forums for teen rock bands – some of them still in single digits! 🎸🙌

It’s honestly lovely to see us oldies helping to create spaces for art and music to flourish. Doesn’t matter if it’s in cafés, pubs, shops or bookshops – that’s exactly how cool things get started!

And if nothing else, we had a great time doing it. 😄

We continue this visual and human journey with the HP Interns Gen 24–25! This week, I’m thrilled to share the portrait of William Tyldesley — and let me tell you, this feature is extra special, because the idea and drive behind this whole project came from him. 🙌

"I am passionate about empowerment, through communication and education. By giving people access to the right information, resources, and tools, they can help uplift themselves to achieve whatever their dreams are. I relish in aiding in that success for others." — William Tyldesley

William is currently studying Politics and International Relations at the University of Reading and has his eyes set on a future in Government or Public Affairs. When he’s not inspiring us at work, he’s probably running (yes, Half Marathons!), playing one of his 4 instruments, or performing with his university’s Big Band. And yes… he enjoys a well-earned glass of Pinot Noir. 🎷🏃‍♂️🍷

Behind the scenes, I’m also working on something exciting — Portrait of HP with this fantastic intern cohort. More soon. For now, let’s celebrate William — the energy, the talent, the vision.

The eye watches.

It lingers on what is not its own — on stories it shall never be part of, lives it will never touch. A man waiting for a train, unaware he’s become a image.

The camera doesn’t just capture. It contemplates.
In the mundane, it finds myth. In the chaos, a strange symmetry.

Sometimes I wonder if the act of observing is itself a kind of authorship — the mind scribbling meanings where there were none, finding metaphor in morning light, purpose in a pigeon’s path.

We look, and in looking, we create.
Perhaps that’s the closest we get to truth.
